Take a stroll along the foreshore pathway and admire the native plant life and wildlife. Keep your eyes open for the beautiful endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo which is often seen in this area. It is also a delight to see the Black Swans wading along the calm waters of the river. At dusk, watch the Tamar Wallabies grazing on the edge of the roadside and among the scattered pasturelands.
Oysters are available seasonally here at American River and fishing is in abundance. American River has a boat ramp for those boating enthusiasts keen to venture into the deeper waters, and there are also boats for hire or Fishing Charters available.
Island Beach approximately 20kms from American River is a prestigious township with magnificent housing and accommodation. Swimming at Island Beach is in calm beautiful blue waters and is safe for all the family to enjoy. Nepean Bay, approximately 30kms from Island Beach is another area with calm shallow waters, ideal if you have young children.
Pennington Bay and Flour Cask Bay are another two beaches not far from American River that are more for the surfing crowd at heart or again great for the fisherman. Feeling energetic, try climbing the 512 steps at Mount Thisby, just near the Pennington Bay turn off.
If you need to get away from it all and would like to feel you have a beach to yourself, visit De’Estrees. Native life at its best. The sound of the ocean crashing on the white sands, fishing, swimming, shell collecting, total relaxation, what more can you ask for.
